Hi All,

My name is Brian and I am from the Mumbles Milers in Swansea. We are a very small club catering for a middle aged group with a few masters. We have about 15 members but 6 of us are doing the Seville Marathon. Our total travelling party is 13 at the moment.

It would be great if you were willing to compare notes, have a team race and maybe meet there. We are flying to Malaga on the 12th and coming back on the 15th (some may stay longer or shorter). We are staying at Tryp Macarena which is about 2km from the stadium.

Best Wishes to all your marathoners.

Field League. Although the Spartans are primarily a road running club, this is the second year that the club has reached the final against clubs which concentrate on Track & Field. Missing several competitors, the Spartans had to spread themselves across as many events as possible and found themselves in 6th place after the first few events but soon had worked themselves ahead of Ryston AC for 5th place. They gradually closed in on Bedford and County AC, the 4th placed team, but were left a few points short at the end.

Competing in the over 35 category, Monica Brown won 3 of her events (100m in 14.7sec, High Jump with 1.30m and 200m in 30.7sec) and also competed in 5 others (Triple Jump with 8.05m, Hammer Throw with 14.97m, Long Jump with 4.26m, 100m Hurdles in 22.9sec and Javelin with 16.61m).
Hi Jo

Great to hear you little one is fine but for a broken collar bone. Might be worth getting him a new skid-lid.

I agree with the basis of your text. Having ridden bicycles for 15 years in bunch races and in training I have seen a few crashes. In all cases including the 3 times I came unstuck, helmets hit the deck with some force taking the brunt of what might well have been fatal or crippling injuries.

A good friend of mine entered a stationary hatch back car head first via the rear window - the car had reversed into his down hill path leaving little option. The helmet was encrusted with glass like a tiara and the top was split off from the rest of the lid. However, he lived. The nursing staff were clear that he would not have had he been without a helmet.

I wear one for every ride I do. Yes, they mess up your hair but not as much as bashing your head on a curbstone.

Have just received an email to remind us entries for this event are still open.

They also sent further details about the event and the charity - as below:

Amaudo 10 km Charity Run, St Paul’s Walden Bury, Sunday September 19th 2010.

This is the sixth year that the run has taken place, and its draw (for those who have any sort of taste for such things!) are clear. It is a challenging course through beautiful varied landscapes; formal gardens, rolling open countryside and shaded woodland. There is one circuit and there are no gates or stiles to break your rhythmn. Hyper-fit participants find challenge from the terrain and competition from other similar runners – but there is also always a strong representation by people for whom completing the run is quite challenge enough. Each year there has been fantastic support from many people, with marshalls, timers, barbecuers and water bearers drawn from the village and further afield and the event has been enjoyed by all involved.

Amaudo UK is a small charity supporting a ground breaking mental health project in Nigeria. I've been involved since 1991, I spent a year there in 1994 and was a founding trustee of Amaudo UK in 1997. My involvement with the project has undoubtedly influenced my career in this country, I work in the NHS as a mental health social worker and manager with the homeless in London, and when I last visited Amaudo in 2007, looking at the project through more experienced and qualified eyes I remained hugely impressed by what the project achieves at so many levels.

Amaudo started as community for homeless people with mental illness. People are brought from the streets, always undernourished, sometimes in chains and often having been subject to terrible abuse. Homeless mentally ill women sometimes have small children with them and are often pregnant. The residents and those who work with them live alongside each other. There is psychiatric and medical input, but just as significant to the residents’ recovery is life in a community where they participate in life, including upkeep of the project and work on the farm. In time a high proportion of residents are able to return, with their mental health stable, to the community where they originally come from. Compared to the UK it is striking how much more often Nigerian communities, families and culture are able to reintegrate people with a history of severe mental illness and homelessness – especially with support that compliments these strengths.

Since the initial project was established in 1990 the charity has developed and expanded. It now has a number of projects including a further residential project, outreach work into the psychiatric wing of the local prison, a program promoting the human rights of people with mental health problems, a project offering and organising support for parents and families of children with learning disablities and Amaudo coordinates a government staffed and funded community psychiatric program. Amaudo’s work is well known in Nigeria and is becoming better known elsewhere, increasingly the models developed by Amaudo are being replicated elsewhere.

Amaudo UK does not provide the core funding for Amaudo Nigeria, nor does it direct the way in which it operates. One of the best features of the work is that is has developed out of locally identified need and sense of responsibility for addressing this – core funding is raised locally, from the government and local people and organisations. But through the recruitment of volunteers with particular skills or knowledge to go out to Nigeria to set things up and train people locally, the accessing of grants (from organisations including Comic Relief and the National Lottery) and through the offering of informed advice and sometimes guidance Amaudo UK has made a very significant contribution to the work in Nigeria.

Please come along on September 19th, whether to its run, enjoy the Bury Gardens or help out, you will almost certainly have a good time (some of the hills are a bit tough!) and you will definitely be supporting a good cause.

To register for the run please email runamaudo@yahoo.com or ring 020 87767363. To find out more about the charity go to amaudouk.org or ring Barney Wells on 07957627062.

Hello there,

I am contacting you about the annual Saharamarathon taking place at the end of February, in 2011, to see if this may be of interest to your members. Sandblast is a London-based arts and human rights charity, which has been officially facilitating UK participation since 2009.

Not to be confused with the Marathon des Sables, in Morocco, the Saharamarathon takes place in the Algerian Sahara in the Saharawi refugee camps near Tindouf. It is organized by the refugees and volunteers from around the world and helps raise the visibility of the plight of close to 200, 000 Saharawis, as well as funds for projects to improve the lives of these long term refugees, who have been stranded in harsh desert camps since 1975.

The first Saharamarathon took place in 2001 and every year has been attracting growing numbers of participants from around the globe. In 2010, 27 runners participated from the UK (the highest number yet). They raised over £20,000 for our Saharawi Artist Fund, which finances arts and cultural development projects in the refugee camps. In total, over 400 runners came from 22 different countries. The event is professionally organized and draws top athletes as well as amateur runners.

Participants can run a full marathon, a half marathon, 10km or 5km. During their week in the camps, they stay with a Saharawi refugee family and get a unique chance to learn their story and experience the legendary hospitality of this exiled desert culture.

Sandblast’s role is to take the headache out of organizing all the logistical aspects of the trip and the stay in the camps. We deal with the flights, visas, accommodation etc. We also organize a special (and optional) educational/cultural programme for those wishing to enrich their experience while in the camps. This includes an evening on the dunes listening to live music and having a traditional desert feast.

I hope you will find this event a compelling one to share with your members to encourage them to join. We have had glowing feedback from runners of previous years so if anyone interested would like to speak to past participants, please let us know. We will be glad to facilitate contact. We also plan a few informational/fundraising events in August and September which your members are welcome to come along to.

Please find here attached the press release, the information pack and a flyer for your consideration. For more information on Sandblast and our Running the Sahara campaign, visit the website at www.sandblast-arts.org and www.sandblast-arts.org/projects/running-the-sahara respectively.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Danielle Smith,

Director and Coordinator
runningthesahara@sandblast-arts.org

Thanks again for the race last week. It was good to see so many runners from my club, GCR, supporting the event.

Can you please ensure that its not so windy for the next one and try to make sure it remains dry!!

I do find members of your club very friendly and pleasant.

Congratulations on the success of the 5Ks because I was concerned that due to the holiday season that they may be a bit disappointing in terms of numbers.

Thankfully I have been proved wrong ( normal ).

Great stuff FVS

Terry Fowler

Please note that there will not be a Starter Group session on Bank Holiday Monday 30th August.

If you are in the middle-front of the Monday group then why not use this as an opportunity to try a Tuesday session? This Tuesday 17th August, 7 regulars from the Monday starter group tried out a Tuesday session for the first time. All coped remarkably well and enjoyed a slightly more challenging session. Hopefully they'll all be back next week!

The slowest group on a Tuesday cover approximately 5 miles and has regular intervals for regrouping, similar to a Monday. Those who are in the middle-front of Mondays group will probably cover between 4.5 - 6 miles through the regrouping.

As with all our training sessions, no-one will get left behind and other runners in the group will be supportive. If you have any queries about the Tuesday (or any other of our sessions) please speak to one of the Club Coaches.

What a great run.

A couple of weeks ago I was letting Group 2 miss a few efforts because of the heat, and they all, (well nearly all), insisted on completing the session (well done guys by the way).

Tuesday evening it poured of rain, even including a burst of hail, and everyone carried on training without a word of complaint (well nearly everyone). "And the coach made us run extra hills as well!" Great work everyone, now you have shown you are real runners.

Just to be fair it looked as if the other groups were sticking out the conditions as well. All real runners!

Hope you feel guilty Captain Bird's Eye.

Archangel

News Release
15th August 2010

ENTER THE PAUL MAGUIRE MEMORIAL 5 RACE NOW

Can you run five miles? Prove it on Sunday 29th August by taking part in the Paul Maguire Memorial Five Mile Race. This will take place on traffic free surfaced paths in Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage and is organised by Fairlands Valley Spartans. The race starts at 11a.m.

PAUL MAGUIRE was a much-loved Spartan who passed away in 2008 after a long battle against cancer. He left a widow, Sharon, a young daughter, Emily, and other family who continue to be members of the Spartans. Paul was a winner of the prestigious Spartan of the Year award. His strength, determination, friendship and good humour continue to be an inspiration to many of us and the Paul Maguire Memorial 5 Race is our tribute to the memory of an inspirational character.

The race which bears Paul’s name is on Sunday 29th August over 5 Miles all within Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage. It is open to both club, unattached and casual runners. You can enter in advance online at http://www.races.fvspartans.org.uk/, or on the day at the Race HQ which will be close to the start in the Gymnastics Centre at Marriotts School. You must arrive before 10.30am if you want to enter on the day). There will be free light refreshments for all runners and a BBQ available for purchasing hot food after the race.

The race will be started by Sharon and Emily, who will also present the medals to the winners.

Chrissie Is A National Champion

After a lengthy delay caused by technical problems, the Association of Running Clubs (ARC) has just announced the results of its 2009 National Marathon Championships which saw medals for three lady Spartans.

Pride of place and a Gold Medal goes to Chrissie King, the new National ARC Champion in the FV45 category in a time of 3:15:33. Congratulations to Chrissie on this outstanding achievement.

In the FV35 Category, Spartans took National Silver and Bronze medals through Tracy Pez in 3:45:19 and Sara O'Callaghan in 3:45:49.

Jim Brown also put in a very creditable performance to come 6th in the MV50 Category in 3:14:55.

Have A Go At 5K In Stevenage

You can have a go in the second and third races in the Spartans evening 5K series. 5K is only just over three miles and will be on the Fairlands Way (start near Webb Rise), Verity Way, Martins Way, Grace Way, Fairlands Way (finish near Douglas Drive) motor traffic free circuit in Stevenage. Race two is on Thursday evening 19th August and the third and final race will be on Thursday 2nd September. More details and how to enter on www.fvspartans.org.uk

The races start near Webb Rise at 7.45p.m. If you have not entered in advance you need to get to the Gymnastics Centre at Marriotts School (SG2 0AN) as soon as possible after 6p.m.

Great Yarmouth Half Marathon

Spartan LIAM HERBERT enjoyed the 20th Great Yarmouth Half Marathon on Sunday.

It was his first time at this race, but having lived in Great Yarmouth for a very small part of his childhood, Liam wanted to give it a go.

Starting just outside, and actually finishing on the halfway line of the pitch at Gorleston Football Club, the course was filled with gentle rises, long flat straights down country lanes and one or two sponge stations (which were very welcome!).

Despite being a solo Spartan at the race, the race hosts, Great Yarmouth Road Runners, gave lots of support and many marshals recognised that I had travelled in from Stevenage!

All in all, it was a great race experience despite being quite a distance to travel there to compete!

Liam was 109th out of the 280 finishers in 1 hour 44 minutes 42 seconds.

Watford Open Graded

STEVE MAYFIELD tackled 800 metres at the Watford Open Graded races on Wednesday evening. The large volume of runners necessitated 22 heats for the 800m and Steve was elevated to the dizzying heights of Heat 3. He has been trying to break the 2:30 barrier this year and despite feeling he'd run well to take fourth place, clocked 2:32.77. That's the third time he’s been under 2:35 this year, but says he clearly still needs to try harder!

Crater Lake Marathon

Hot, hard, hilly and high is how ROGER BIGGS described the latest in his marathon a week events. He was in Oregon, USA for the Crater Lake Marathon. The race circled Crater Lake, surely one of the natural wonders of the world?

It was hot (80F, 27.5C) at the end, quite hilly with one continuous 5 mile climb, and at height above sea level between 6500 & 7800ft.

Despite this Roger managed to all run the marathon and finished third in the 60-69 age category with a time of 4 hours 35 minutes 6 seconds.

Thorney Five

PETE SMITH and JIM BROWN enjoyed the Thorney Five Mile Road Race near Peterborough on Sunday morning. Pete was 81st in 34 minutes 56 seconds and Jim 105th in 36 minutes 30 seconds. There were 248 finishers.

The new out and back course could be super fast for those in good form. Well surfaced, no hills and closed roads. Brilliant.

Masters Inter-Area Track and Field

Last Sunday (8th August) IRIS HORNSEY and CHAS AVIS travelled to Solihull to compete in the Masters Inter-Area Track and Field Match. They were representing Eastern Veterans and, as last year, there were ten teams taking part including teams from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Chas took part in three events in the M70 (men aged 70 plus) age group: He was sixth in the 100 metres in 19:00 seconds; sixth in the 400 metres in 97.5 seconds and fourth in the Long Jump with a jump of 2metres 72 centimetres.

Iris tackled three events in the W60 age group: She was fourth in the 800 metres in 3 minutes 29.5 seconds; third in the Long Jump with a jump of 2m 60cms; and ran 800 metres in the last leg of the Medley Relay in which she was part of the second team.

The EVAC Ladies' Team finished second overall and the Men's team came third.

54 Miles Of Herts Stroller

On Saturday 14th August CAROL PAUL and MIKE NEWBITT took part in the Herts Stroller. This was an off road event over 54 miles taking in the countryside of Hertfordshire.

The event started at Hitchin rugby club and went out to Pirton, up Pegsdon hill to Hexton and Barton Le Clay and up to the Barton Hill Nature Reserve. From here it went down to Lilley and then skirted the edge of Luton taking in Mangrove Green, Tea Green, Darley Hall and Peters Green. From Peters Green it headed out to Wheathampstead where it started to make its way back to Hitchin via Ayot St Lawrence, Kimpton, Whitwell, Preston and up hill to Offley. From Offley the last leg went to Little Offley and along the Icknield way back into Hitchin.

With the first two and a half hours in heavy rain and showers on and off all day and the last hour and a half in the dark Carol and Mike completed the course in 13 hours and 30 minutes.

Hauilin Aspen Trail Marathon

Roger was in Bend, Oregon recently for the tough Hauilin Aspen Trail Marathon on very difficult terrain. The temperature ranged from 50F at the start to 80F by the finish. The marathon started on the outskirts of Bend at 3700ft, and finished at around 4000ft, but rose to 5800ft at the halfway point. The bright sun shining through the trees, made it very difficult to pick out rocks and other hazards. Roger tumbled over five times during the race but finished in 4 hours 38 minutes 42 seconds.

17-25? Run4Fun Relaunched!

The Run 4 Fun group for 17 to 25 year olds is going to be relaunched on Monday evenings from Monday 13th September.
