SPARTANS TRACK & FIELD DAY

Fairlands Valley Spartans are primarily a road running club but several enjoyed a track and field afternoon at Ridlins on Saturday.

Participants had to choose one throw (from discus, hammer, javelin or shot); one jump (high, long or triple); one sprint (100, 200 or 400 metres) and one middle distance (800, 1,500 or 3,000 metres).

MONICA BROWN showed her heptathlon form in winning the women (34 to 45 category) with 251 points, TRACY PEZ took silver with 162 and LISA POTTER bronze with 93.

Only a week after her national heptathlon success CHRIS FEELY won the women (45 – 54) gold with 224 points.  SHARON CROWLEY took silver with 162.

There were eleven medal winners in the men’s events.

In a tight competition STEVE SMITHSON was victorious in the men’s 35 to 44 category with 275 points, ANDREW HULL won silver with 251 and ANDY JAY bronze with 241.

The battle for first in the men’s 45 to 54 competition was down to the last event where RICHARD SIDLIN won with 249 points compared with MARK GLADING’s 246.  PAUL HOLGATE was third with 193.

And there were those who started doing these things when they were measured in yards.

ROGER BIGGS was in Scotland for the Dundee Marathon on Saturday.  This circled the outer limits of Dundee on trails, paths and roads, including 10 miles along the shores of the Firth of Tay.  Light cloud made it a good day for marathon running.  Roger finished in 4 hours 5 minutes 1 second.

Brown at Buzzard

After Saturday’s efforts at the Spartans’ track and field day JIM BROWN ran in the Leighton Buzzard 10 mile race Sunday morning.  On a lovely morning for running there was a bit of a “grovel” up to Mentmore at about 3 miles but otherwise gently undulating.  Jim was 50th in 68 minutes 25 seconds.

Harvest Trail at Royston

SHARON CROWLEY and LORRAINE THOMAS both enjoyed the Harvest Trail off road event at Royston.  They both finished the six mile option in 1 hour 16 minutes 45 seconds and reported a lovely sunny morning with a nice big cake at the finish!

In the 10 mile event TRACY STILES finished in 1 hour 54 minutes followed by DAVID BOWKER and his two dogs in 2 hours.

Plonton Plod

Four Spartans tackled the Plonton Plod.  It was an off road ultra of 27.5 miles from Great Plonton near Grantham.  The course was through countryside and villages in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire with views of Bevoir castle. It was a great day with beautiful weather.
